The volcanos of Ecuador

Ecuador is a volcanic country; it’s located in what is known as the pacific belt of fire. It has 84 identify volcanoes, which includes the Galapagos islands. Some are active, like the Sangay, Reventador or Cotopaxi.

The land has been created and transform by these volcanoes’ trough out hundreds of thousand of years, they are identified with the highland cultures since the beginning of time. They shape their way of thinking by their creation of different myths to explain the eruptions. Also there are the myths of battles among the male volcanoes for the love of a female volcano, like the one between the Chimborazo with the Carihuairazo for the love of the Tungurahua, or the fight between female volcanoes like the Cotacachi and Cayambe for the love of Imbabura.

They are also seen as destructors of life due to the eruptions, but at the same time the givers of life because the snow that melts in the summer brings water to the different communities that lives around them.

They are majestic, magical, and the highest of them are snow caped all year round. Their pure white against the deep blue of the Andean sky is mystical.
